I’ve been thinking about the problem of where to hold Frank’s party a lot, and suddenly I have a great idea.

‘Mr Babbar, it’s Frank’s birthday next Saturday and we’re planning a surprise party,’ I tell him.

Mr Babbar’s eyebrows jump up. ‘Really? You know that Mr Pickles does not like surprises?’

‘But it’s his birthday and he’s turning almost one hundred,’ I say. ‘And I go over to his house every day and I know he wants a party. He’s just too shy to say so, but if we don’t have one then he’ll be sad. The problem is we have nowhere to hold it. I was thinking we could have it here – in the dining room?’

Mr Babbar shakes his head.

‘I’m sorry, Willa. Frank’s not the only one with a birthday next weekend. Dear old Mrs Gupta is turning one hundred, and her family have planned a huge celebration. They’ve booked the whole place,’ he says, then excuses himself to go and answer a phone that has been ringing off the hook in the office.

I look at Tae. ‘What about your house?’

He shakes his head too. ‘I asked Mum and she says there’s no way anyone’s coming to our place until Dad’s finished repainting the lounge room, and he’s too busy with the play to do anything until the next school holidays.’

My shoulders slump.
